Etymology is the study of the origins or roots of words. And sometimes, the stories of these origins can be downright fascinating!
In the past, nitric acid was used to test whether an object was really made of gold. This test is based on the fact that other metals dissolve in nitric acid much more easily than gold does. So, an “acid test” came to mean any rigorous or definitive test of something.
