Etymology is the study of the origins or roots of words. And sometimes, the stories of these origins can be downright fascinating!
Why is a hot dog called a hot dog?
Most of us have enjoyed this quintessential American snack, but it does seem like an odd name. Have you ever wondered why it is called a “hot dog”?
Well, the food was initially called a frankfurter or frank, then a wienerwurst or wiener. But, others noted how is resembled a cute little dog breed, the dachshund. Since it was served hot, it came to be called a hot dog.
If you had a dachshund and wanted to dress it in a Halloween costume, what costume would you choose?
